Show of Hands

Have you ever known somebody who said they have contemplated suicide and you can't help wondering (silently) if maybe that might be the best thing if they're determined to be so unhappy?

Of course you can't suggest it because they would be happy to let you have the responsibility.

Funny you should mention it. Myself and one of the other GPs were discussing one of my borderline personality patients and she was reflecting on the first time she had to see a failed suicide as an intern. She went to see this patient in emergency department and took a history from them. After she took the history and learnt all about their horrible life she thought to herself "suicide does seem like a really good option for this person, perhaps I should offer to help". Naturally one doesn't say this kind of thing to the patients.....

Or as the one of the lines in "Adia" a song by Sarah McLachlan goes "I'll leave you with your misery, a friend who won't betray"

I like the song lyric. That about says it. Some people just cling to their own misery. (shakes head, shrugs)
